On The Road To Normandy and a little beyond – A Sailors Life Story
The late Lt Bernard Upton MBE RNR survived the sinking of the Bangor Class Minesweeper HMS CROMARTY when she was mined in the Straits of Bonifacio in the Mediterranean on the 23rd October 1943.
One of the highlights of the book is Lt Upton’s report to the C-in-C Med of the sinking of Cromarty written just 3 days after twenty members of the ships company were killed.
Lt Upton was a very active man, sailing his own yacht single-handed at the age of 94. His yacht was a Fairey Atalanta which he built himself in a printer’s yard in 1959.
The Foreword to the book was written by Admiral Paddy McAlpine president of the MCDOA.
The well-illustrated book is a fascinating read and costs just £10 including post & packing obtainable from Richard James, Lt Upton’s nephew.
