As the days start to lengthen and the snowdrops and daffodils start to bloom at the Arboretum, we’re pleased to share with you details of our early spring events. This Valentine’s Day, 14th February, we will be sharing our site with many of your four legged friends at our first ever Paws for Remembrance event which will help raise funds toward the up-keep of our grounds.
Also in February, on the eve of the dedication of the Gulf War (90-91) Memorial, you can meet author Col. (Retd) Bruce Duncan MBE as he shares his career experiences of being ‘a loan soldier’ in our second “A Spotlight on talk” of the year.
We’re also still appealing for photographs and stories to contribute towards the work of our artist in residence, Helen Marshall, so please take the opportunity to be part of this wonderful legacy. Now is also the perfect time for families to enjoy the Arboretum as we offer a range of half term activities and a special, mouth-watering Mother’s Day menu!
Sunday 14th February
Love your dog and explore the Arboretum’s dog walking route to raise money for the Arboretum at our first Paws for Remembrance event. Our expert guides will be en route to tell you about some of the many memorials you can see and a team from the PDSA will also be on hand to provide advice and free dog health checks. They will also be sharing the stories of some of the very worthy recipients of the PDSA Dickin Medal. A donation of £5 per dog is suggested. Advanced booking essential.
19th – 21st February
Our artist in residence Helen Marshall of the People’s Picture, will be returning to the Arboretum this February. Join her to contribute stories and photographs and to have your portrait taken which may then appear in her final artwork: a montage of lots of individual pictures. The piece will be housed in our Remembrance Centre exhibition which is due to open in the autumn.
Half Term Holiday Activities
15th – 19th February
Young adventurers are encouraged to visit the Arboretum this half term where we’ve drawn inspiration from the abundance of wildlife in our grounds. Activities will include insect and fossil modelling, creepy crawly kite making, beautiful bird and flower creation, and stone painting.
A Spotlight On…The Loan Soldier

Twenty-five years after he and his family were caught up in Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait in 1990, join author Col (Retd) Bruce Duncan MBE to hear about his fascinating military career based on loan service in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Copies of The Loan Solider, signed by Bruce, will be available to purchase on the day. Advanced booking required, £3 per person, NMA Friends FREE.
